Boringdon Primary School Maths Statement At Boringdon Primary School, we believe in the excitement and wonder of the mathematical world. Mathematics is a universal language that enables children to explore, question and make sense of the world around them. Our aim is for all children to think mathematically, developing the confidence, reasoning, problem-solving and enquiry skills needed to succeed both in school and beyond. Through a mastery approach to teaching, we ensure that children develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts rather than simply learning procedures. Learning is carefully sequenced in small steps, allowing children to build secure foundations and make meaningful connections between mathematical ideas. We believe that all children can achieve success in mathematics. Our curriculum is designed to nurture confident, skilled and resilient mathematicians who understand that mathematics is an essential part of everyday life. We encourage children to embrace challenge, learn from mistakes and develop a positive attitude towards problem solving. At Boringdon Primary School, our goal is for children to "Calculate, Not Count", developing efficient strategies and a secure understanding of number that supports them throughout their mathematical journey Intent At Boringdon Primary School, we intend for our children to become confident mathematicians who can solve problems, make connections and explain their thinking with clarity. We believe mathematics should be engaging, challenging and accessible to all learners. Our mathematics curriculum aims to: · Provide creative and engaging learning opportunities through a mastery approach to mathematics. · Develop children's confidence, resilience and perseverance when faced with mathematical challenges. · Ensure all children can achieve success and recognise themselves as capable mathematicians. · Develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills through rich mathematical discussion and exploration. · Help children understand how mathematics underpins everyday life and prepares them for future learning and opportunities. · Enable children to make meaningful connections between different areas of mathematics. · Provide opportunities to apply mathematical knowledge across the wider curriculum. · Deliver a curriculum that is fully aligned with the National Curriculum. · Foster a love of mathematics and an appreciation of its importance in understanding the world around us.
Implementation: In our Pre-School and Early Years Foundation Stage, children build strong foundations in mathematical understanding through high-quality teaching, purposeful play and meaningful exploration. We follow the White Rose Maths scheme, which supports children in developing secure number sense, pattern recognition, mathematical vocabulary and problem-solving skills through a mastery approach. As children move into Key Stages 1 and 2, we use the Power Maths scheme of learning to ensure consistent coverage of the National Curriculum and a coherent progression of mathematical knowledge and skills. Power Maths supports our mastery approach by enabling children to develop a deep understanding of concepts before moving on to more complex learning. The progression from White Rose in EYFS to Power Maths in Year 1 provides continuity and builds upon the strong foundations established in the early years. At the heart of our mathematics curriculum is a commitment to securing strong foundational knowledge. We recognise that children must first develop a deep and secure understanding of key mathematical concepts before progressing to more complex ideas. Therefore, our curriculum is carefully planned and sequenced to build cumulatively over time, ensuring that prior learning is continually revisited, strengthened and applied in new contexts. This enables children to make meaningful connections across mathematical concepts, develop long-term retention and become fluent, confident mathematicians. Lessons are carefully structured and include: · Retrieval opportunities to revisit and secure prior learning. · Real-life mathematical contexts that encourage curiosity and discussion. · Explicit teaching and guided practice before independent application. · Opportunities for rich mathematical talk, reasoning and explanation. · Practical resources, visual representations and abstract methods to deepen understanding. · Carefully planned questioning that encourages children to justify, explain and refine their thinking. Through our mastery approach, children are encouraged to explore concepts in depth, make connections between different areas of mathematics and develop confidence in explaining their reasoning. Oracy is an important part of our mathematics curriculum, with children regularly discussing their ideas, sharing strategies and using precise mathematical vocabulary to communicate their understanding. To develop fluency, each year group has identified termly "Must Have" number facts and key mathematical knowledge. These are regularly revisited through daily practice to ensure key skills become secure, automatic and readily accessible. We believe that fluency provides the foundation upon which reasoning and problem-solving skills can flourish. Children also develop fluency through: · Mastering Number · NumBots · Times Table Rock Stars · Daily retrieval practice and regular opportunities to revisit previously taught learning Teachers use ongoing assessment, questioning and responsive teaching to identify misconceptions and adapt learning accordingly. This ensures all children are appropriately supported and challenged, allowing every learner to make progress and deepen their understanding. We believe that every child can succeed in mathematics. Through carefully planned teaching, small-step progression and high expectations for all, we provide the support, challenge and opportunities needed for every child to develop as a confident, successful and resilient mathematician.
Impact: Through our mathematics curriculum, children develop confidence, fluency and resilience as mathematicians. They leave each year with a secure understanding of the mathematical concepts taught and are able to apply their knowledge in a range of contexts. Children at Boringdon Primary School: · Enjoy mathematics and engage positively with learning. · Demonstrate increasing fluency in number facts and calculation strategies. · Use mathematical reasoning to explain and justify their thinking. · Apply their understanding to solve a wide range of problems. · Show resilience when tackling challenging mathematical tasks. · Make strong progress from their individual starting points. · Are well prepared for the next stage of their education. Teachers use ongoing assessment, questioning and observation to identify children's understanding and next steps in learning. Regular opportunities to revisit previously taught concepts ensure knowledge is retained and built upon over time. Through this approach, children develop the skills, knowledge and confidence required to become successful lifelong mathematicians. |
