Governors

The management of the school is the responsibility of the School Governors who are nominated or elected to serve a four year term of office. The day to day management of the school is the responsibility of the Head Teacher or their nominees when absent. The school benefits from the fact that the governors are either parent governors or have long links with the school. Currently the Governing Body has twelve members who meet termly to monitor the smooth running of the school, to decide matters of policy and to ensure Government and L.A. requirements are met.

Report from the Chair of Governors
As Chair of Governors at such a busy School, I find it difficult to condense all the news and activities into one brief message, there is always so much going on!

Boringdon Primary School is not simply a School where children take part in lessons – the extra-curricular and inter-school activities provided by the staff and enjoyed by all is a massive part of the Boringdon ethos.

In addition to a committed and fabulous staff, the schools children also benefit from an active Friends Society – the Friends of Boringdon put on numerous events and raise loads of money for the benefit of all the children. I would put out a big plea to all new parents to consider helping with Friends – it is very rewarding all around.

Then there are the Governors – we act (I hope) very quietly and behind the scenes but I would like to thank all of my fellow Governors for volunteering their time and expertise to ensure that Boringdon runs a steady course through the ever changing world of Curriculum, Laws and Guidance’s and Local issues.

The role of Governor is one of strategy – we make strategic decisions on behalf of the School ; we ensure that the School uses its finances in the best possible manner and of course we act as a critical friend to the Head of School and Senior Leadership Team. Hopefully we are doing a good job and will continue to make the best decisions for the School and its pupils in the years to come.

During 2015/16, in addition to the work on Safeguarding, Policies, and Statutory Requirements, we have been able to get involved in several areas that have a direct impact on the School. For example:-

Implementation of the new National Curriculum
  • Design and implementation of the new Pupil Assessment systems
  • Consideration of ICT enhancement within the School
  • Liaison with Local & National Governments regarding the Schools funding
  • Capital Funding and grants for new buildings and, in the last term, a new outside cover for Reception
  • Discussions to help ensure maintenance of the extremely high academic results achieved by the School year after year
  • Ensuring Government Pupil Premium funding is allocated in the best way possible
  • Ensuring Quality of teaching and learning meets expectations Reviewing Early Years Provision and Special Educational Needs at Boringdon
  • Agreeing and installing new Solar Panels on the new classroom pods
  • Attending and supporting the School at many of its “events” through the year
  • Most importantly, setting a strategic direction for the school involving staffing, finances, and teaching / learning for this, the next and future years.
All of this is achieved “behind the scenes” by a group of volunteers – I would once again like to thank them all.

As the 2016/17 Academic year progresses, I will of course report on :-
  • Sports Events and Achievements
  • Shows and Performances
  • Extra Curricular Clubs
  • Results
  • Friends of Boringdon Events
And many more things besides.

Right now however, I would like to wish you all a great Academic Year and hope life at Boringdon is positive and fruitful for all the pupils and their families.

Having seen two child successfully through all years at Boringdon, I now have one boy attending the school in Year 5. With this vested interest in the School, I became a Parent Governor in 2007/8 and, at the end of my term, was selected as a Community Governor in 2011/12. I have chaired the finance sub-committee and, since July 2012, have proudly filled the role of Chair of Governors. I am a qualified Financial Adviser and Chartered Accountant. Having worked in Industry and in large Accountancy Practice, I now run my own business as a local Financial Adviser in Plympton. Boringdon is a great School – the enthusiasm and commitment of the teachers, the teaching assistants, parents & guardians and of course, the children, help make it a pleasure to volunteer to help, where possible, with the running of the School.

I have lived in Plympton for just over 4 years and have 2 children, a daughter in Year 1 at Boringdon and a son who will be joining Reception in September 2017. I have been involved within the education sector over the last 15 years, initially as a Secondary Maths teacher, within the Local Authority, and more recently working with students who have disabilities at Plymouth University. Consequently, education, learning and providing opportunities for all young people to reach their full potential is at the heart of my work. The nurturing ethos and commitment of the staff at Boringdon Primary School was a key reason for me recently joining the Governing Body and I look forward to offering my support to the school.
